The Smolensk fortress wall was built at the turn of the XVI–XVII centuries. The decree of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich on its construction was issued on December 15, 1595, the foundation of the fortress took place in 1596 with the participation of Boris Godunov. For centuries, the Smolensk fortress Wall was one of the main outposts on the western frontier of Russia, 18 of the 38 towers and 21 strands with a total length of about three kilometers have survived to our time. In 2020, in order to stage-by-stage museification of the monument, the Smolenskaya Fortress Museum of national importance was established.
